Abstract

This study examined the relationships between the factors that facilitate IP appropriation and innovation performance. A quantitative data analysis based on a survey of 900 biotechnology, pharmaceutical and ICT companies in Australia found that trade secrets, the use of revenues from innovation, and organisational learning are significant enablers of IP appropriation. A multiple cross-case analysis found that all three industries rely on organisational resources and the current IP management strategy to facilitate IP appropriation. The qualitative analysis also revealed that biopharma companies rely on formal IPRs, while ICT companies choose not to implement IPRs. The study concluded that appropriation strategies should include practices and strategies relating to the firm’s resources, to IP management practices, and to organisational learning.
