Abstract
The Good News of Jesus’ birth was foretold by all the prophets. In our world of 2011 there is much good news and, as with the birth stories of Jesus, more than a few hints of impending tragedy and injustice. For all the people living in or around the river Murray-Darling basin we can truly hear and see the “rivers (floods) clapping their hands” Psalm 98:8, as the psalmist so wonderfully described the joy of all creation at the Lord’s coming. Late last year, after many years of drought, the people of South Australia, in particular, rejoiced to see the mighty Murray flowing out to sea with its water flows peaking in February of this year. There have been many stories of hope and joy at the flood of water surging to the sea. One delightful story described in a local newspaper (The Advertiser, 28 July, 2010) was the predicament of the native Congolli fish. Their custom is for the female fish to live in one reach of the river and the males in another reach of the river. Sadly, during the extended drought the interconnecting part of the river dried up and the fish were isolated from one another for several years. The good news is that after the floods late last year, enough river water has flowed through to open the passageway between the female and male groups of fish, and the hope of a future generation of Congolli fish seems assured.
