Abstract

Stobie poles, invented by James Cyril Stobie in 1924, are crucial for South Australia's electricity network. These steel-concrete-steel poles have a unique structure, consisting of external steel H sections filled with concrete, connected by bolts. With around 725,000 Stobie poles across South Australia, they play a vital role in extending power distribution, especially to rural areas. However, there's a lack of research on these essential components. This thesis comprehensively investigates the structural performance of Stobie poles through a combination of numerical modeling, analytical analysis, and experimental testing. The research aims to understand pole behavior and improve their design and durability. Key findings include the significance of steel strength, optimal bolt parameters, and insights into how these poles perform under different loading conditions.
