The study investigated the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) needs of Thai university tourism students during their placements as tour operators. It explored both English language requirements and the particular learning needs of students through observation and interviews with students, staff and tour operators.Based on the analysis of target situation necessities, fluency within particular communicative events was identified as an overarching English language requirement, while communicative competence, scaffolding and learner autonomy were identified as key learning needs.
