Abstract

This article outlines the methodologies used to investigate partial and selective sleep deprivation in humans and animals, discussing the neurobehavioral, physiological, and psychosocial consequences of reduced sleep. Sleep propensity, vigilant attention, mood, emotion, memory, decision making, and driving performance are discussed. Research on physiological consequences of partial sleep restriction describes changes in hormones secretion, endocrine and metabolic responses, activation of inflammatory processes, decreased immune responses, pointing to an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The article then reviews the findings from rapid eye movement (REM) and slow-wave sleep (SWS) selective sleep stage deprivation studies and considers limitations of the research
