Abstract
In 2010 the Standards Australia committee BD-10 approved a revision to AS 3972 – General purpose and blended cements (Standards Australia 2010), which included the following major changes ; The mineral addition was increased from a maximum of 5% to a maximum of 7.5% ; Minor additional constituents to a maximum of 5% of the mineral addition were permitted ; The maximum chloride level was set at 0.10% by mass of the cement. Concerns were expressed about the lack of published Australian data regarding both the increased level of limestone mineral additions (LMA), the most widely used mineral addition, and the incorporation of cement kiln dust (CKD) as an addition to cement. Based on these concerns the author proposed a research program to investigate the effect on chloride ingress into mortar and concrete when the limestone mineral addition in cement was increased to 15% and when LMA was used in conjunction with up to 5% cement kiln dust.
