dc.description.abstractThis study utilised the Double ABC-X model of Family Stress and Adaptation to investigate the stress and coping responses of families with a hospitalised infant, and to assist in the identification of factors which relate to family adjustment. The sample consisted of 46 mothers and 25 fathers (including 25 couples) with an infant who was admitted to the Rose Ward at the Women's and Children's Hospital for a minimum of 48 hours. Parents completed instruments which corresponded with the model, including the Parental Stressor Scale: Infant Hospitalisation and Family Inventory of Life Events and Changes ('stressors'), Family Inventory of Resources Management and the Coping Health Inventory for Parents ('resources'), and the depression, anxiety and hostility subscales of the Symptom Checklist 90-R ('psychological distress' and 'adaptation').
