Abstract

This thesis explores the role of memory in the Surrealism of Czech émigré artist Dušan Tomáš Marek (1926–1993). An extensive examination of the complex and turbulent nature of Czech history forms the basis for arguing that its foundation, construction and legacies were profoundly influential elements in the formation of Marek’s identity. A survey of the social, political, spiritual, artistic and familial contexts into which Marek was born, during the years of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia, frames the conditions that facilitated the emergence of his philosophy and iconography.
