dc.description.abstract“Body Image, Coming Out, and Societal Norms in Lesbian Women: A Mixed-Methods Thesis” used three different methods of research inquiry to explore body image in lesbian women. The first study was a meta-analysis and examined differences in body image disturbances between lesbian and heterosexual women. The second study interviewed lesbian women about their experiences of coming out and their body image. The third study examined whether the relationship between the awareness and internalisation of the thin ideal and body dissatisfaction are affected by sexual orientation. Taken together, the results from all three studies included in the thesis revealed that some lesbian women feel more positive about their bodies compared to heterosexual women, which highlights the complex relationships between a lesbian sexual orientation and the development, maintenance, and experience of body image.
