Abstract

In general, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have been slow to adopt digital technologies and this has impeded their ability to compete effectively. The purpose of this preliminary research is to explore factors influencing SME IT adoption and investigate the role of local government in supporting SMEs in the Salisbury region of Northern Adelaide. A literature review identified factors relating to organisation, industry and national readiness. These factors were qualitatively assessed during stakeholder interviews across a range of key industries, with evidence indicating that IT adoption by SMEs is influenced by the expertise of 'IT champions' who drive the IT agenda forward by strategically aligning it with business goals, using a suitable process for identifying, implementing and evaluating technologies and, in the process, creating a sustainable, innovative organisational culture. Local government bodies can play a vital role in facilitating SME IT adoption through tailored digital engagement programs addressing these factors.
