Abstract

Listening to sound in environment is a complex engagement. Understanding and identifying unique and integrated elements of sound within a specific environment is equally problematic. Embedded in the continual developing and changing events, acoustics, and the perception of an environment are multiplicities too numerous to communicate. Deciphering this complexity therefore begins with the knowledge of how to listen to elements within the multiplicities. This thesis’ objective is to accomplish this task. Situating the environment at the heart of the dissertation, the central argument is that sounds within it, whether perceptively or physically determined, can be constituted as acting forces and pressures. These interactive and interconnected constructions are heard in the dissertation as sound-pressure-intensities. In principle, the goal of this exegesis is exploring/examining, exposing a method/practice of environment listening attuned to power structures, forces or happenings that are exerting energies both perceptively and physically.
