Abstract

Robustness, low cost and high torque density are the main characteristics of switched reluctance machines (SRM) that have made them promising for a variety of applications. In this paper a small diameter, long stack length (small aspect ratio) 6kW SRM is designed. In the first step, the dimensions of the studied SRM are derived based on conventional sizing equations. The significance of the rotor and stator pole arcs and also the effective torque zone as a constraint of the design are discussed. A finite-element study is carried out to validate the analytical model of the proposed SRM. The performance of the machine is comprehensively studied in different operating speeds. Simulation results demonstrate the capability of the machine for operation over a wide speed range.pa
