Abstract

Australian newspapers have in recent years sigificantly increased the column space devoted to obituaries; eight dailies now publish them in dedicated sections. This phenomenon has followed a surge in obituary publication by major newspapers in Britain and the United States. Scholorly research - until now, overwhelmingly American in character - has followed too; a notable strand within that scholarship has concerned itself with the question of male/female imbalance in the obituary columns. Women, those studies hove shown, are generally outntunbered four to one. How, then, do the women of Australia fare in the matter of posthumous appraisal in newsprint? This study demonstrates a remarkable correlation with American results, and discusses questions of demographic selection which contribute to the extended imbalance.
