Abstract
The present chapter is intended to update the major new preparations, reactions, structural features and applications of 1,2- and 1,3-oxathietanes and their associated oxidized derivatives such as β-sultones and β-sultines, which can be classified as four-membered rings with one oxygen atom and one sulfur atom. All relevant literature between 1995 and 2006 has been incorporated where relevant. From a historical perspective it should be pointed out that while there was much research being conducted on the synthesis and characterization of the properties of these systems during the period between 1970 and 1995, such interest has waned over the past decade. As a consequence this chapter will be smaller in length to that within CHEC-II(1996), however, still covers the same scope.
