Abstract

The starting point of any sustainable development is the satisfaction of the basic human needs of shelter, warmth, health, opportunities for work, access to facilities and a pleasant environment. Social and environmental goals are often mutually reinforcing. For example the provision of a range of different type, sizes and tenures of housing in a neighbourhood increases both social choice and environmental sustainability. Some design encourages social sustainability as well as social inclusion whereas some does not. It is a general believe that there is a strong relationship between urban form and sustainability. Urban form is nothing but the product of the design elements and design process. It is believe that there are certain type of design which supports sustainability such as compact development, design which gives due respect to orientation, passive solar design, mixed land uses, diversity etc. The issues of sustainable development have given birth to new paradigm of design approach such as new urbanism, neotraditional approach, transit oriented development, compact city and eco-city. The aim of this paper is to explore is there any relationship between urban form and social sustainability at residential level. Research selected 3 case studies with various urban forms from Delhi, the capital of India and analysed what is the impact of urban form on social sustainability.
