Abstract

Sand is one of the most common soil deposits which in its natural state can be very loose and inadequately strong to build civil infrastructure. Therefore, soil improvement methods need to be applied to these loose deposits before or after infrastructure construction. Most of the current soil improvement techniques utilize artificial material but over the last decade, Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) has gained popularity as an alternative to conventional soil improvement techniques. MICP is a natural process that utilizes the metabolic activity of bacteria to bind the sand particles together through calcium carbonate precipitation. In this study, MICP was applied to Adelaide Industrial (AI) sand sourced from Adelaide plain. Various tests were conducted on untreated and treated samples which show significant strength improvement for AI sand samples MICP treatment.
