Joint authoring and attendance at conferences with higher degree students has a lot more opportunities for learning than just the research rewards. The experience delivers practice-based learning at a level not deliverable in class or in the normal research relationship. Issues that arise include time management, methodology issues, presentation decisions, and production standards. Experiential issues include tactical and strategic positioning in terms of conference culture. The paper extrudes some principles from the year’s conference experiences.
