Abstract

Individuals recovering from a first episode of mental illness often experience complex unmet needs. These needs are not currently systematically evaluated in Australian tertiary mental health services. A four-phase, mixed methods approach to developing and testing a needs assessment tool for this population was undertaken. Phases included: 1) scoping review of the literature; 2) focus groups with service users; 3) development and validation of the tool: the Needs in Recovery Assessment (NiRA) and; 4) reliability evaluation with simulated patients. Results suggest that the NiRA is a valid and reliable tool. The NiRA is ready to be pilot tested in a clinical setting. The introduction of the NiRA should improve the identification and prioritisation of needs in mental health services, increase service user engagement, and improve the delivery of person-centred, recovery-oriented care.
