Abstract

Honest Magic is a practice-led research project exploring the capability of the photographic medium to create a sense of enchantment, in the context of the evolving nature of photographic depiction in the age of digital imagery. This research project expands on understandings of the relationship between optical devices and magic from the 15th Century, with particular emphasis on the concept of natural magic, to consider the contemporary relationship of photography with ideas of the magical and enchanted. In recent decades photography has transitioned from a purely physical, analogue medium to a predominantly ephemeral digital one. The photograph, once a discrete object – tangible, collectable and with an inherent value – has become ephemeral, shareable, transmutable. Does digital photography have the same capacity for enchantment as its analogue predecessors?
