Recent significant changes in the healthcare system in South Australia (SA) have required nurses and midwives to adapt to new models of care, processes and technology as well as relocation of services. Anecdotal evidence from multiple sources within or close to the SA health system suggests that this is putting significant strain on the nursing and midwifery professions, potentially varying with the degree of change experienced. It is important to investigate and understand how these changes have impacted the nursing and midwifery workforce in order to inform the development of strategies to address identified issues. The Rosemary Bryant AO Research Centre, in collaboration with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (SA Branch) conducted a survey to explore the climate of the nursing and midwifery workforce across SA including how the work of nurses and midwives has been affected by health system changes.
