Abstract
Stalking has many legal definitions, but is generally thought of as the unwanted following and harassment of a person. The Internet age has brought with it technologies which allow stalkers to follow every minute detail of a person’s life. However, the converse side of the issue, the ability of a target to detect and track stalking behaviour, has not received nearly as much attention from researchers, with privacy and security research largely discussing other threat models. This research attempts to address this gap. It presents a model of stalking technology which describes the technology in a way that makes potential countermeasures easy to spot. The research then investigates some existing stalking technologies and the countermeasures suggested by the model, in order to develop new tools to assist potential victims of stalking.
