Abstract

The literature review reveals that the integration of OQNs into the Australian healthcare system has not received adequate attention, from either the research community or the healthcare industry. This is a significant gap given that OQNs come mainly from developing countries. For them, aged care will be a completely new employment area and the role of an aged care RN will be quite different from that of a hospital or acute care RN. The overall aim of this study, underpinned by a transformative/advocacy approach, is to provide insights into the types and levels of support required by overseas-qualified nurses (OQNs). To achieve this, the study investigates the individual, sociocultural and service-related barriers and facilitators to adjustment in the context of the general psychological wellbeing of OQNs. Such an investigation is not only of benefit to the nurses in question, but will also be of benefit to their employers and, most importantly, to the wider Australian community.
