Abstract
This thesis investigated the prevalence and risk factors associated with delirium and cognitive decline following coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG). Additionally, this thesis assessed the effect of a randomised controlled efficacy trial of cognitive training interventions pre- and post-CABG on these cognitive outcomes. Overall, the results of this thesis could have critical clinical implications such as improving post-operative patient management, more precise targeting of pre-operative interventions, and the shortlisting of factors to be utilised in the development of sensitive risk prediction tools. Additionally, the current thesis highlights that cognitive training is a feasible intervention to target pre-CABG cognition and may have potential to reduce the incidence of poor cognitive outcomes post-CABG.
