Abstract

This project details the development of new approaches to jazz improvisation from the perspective of a jazz slide trombonist. The primary case studies from which the approaches were derived are the Clark Terry & Bob Brookmeyer Quintet recordings of the 1960s, and were developed through a process of transcription, practise and finally performance. For this project original transcription of a wide selection of solos and arrangements from this group were produced and meticulously notated and analysed. The information gleaned from this process resulted in the formulation of practise techniques which were subsequently exhibited on the submitted recording. The core objective of this project was to identify the improvisational technique of Terry on trumpet and flugelhorn; and Brookmeyer on valve trombone. This research identifies the possibilities and limitations for the application of these techniques to the author’s chosen instruments, slide trombone and bass trumpet. This submission comprises one CD of recorded music, a portfolio of transcriptions, analyses, and an accompanying dissertation.
