Abstract

This thesis takes the position that biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand is not so much a theoretical construct as a proclamation of a political stance. To justify that position it examines the literature related to the circumstances giving rise to the Treaty of Waitangi of 1840. It traces subsequent provincial government interpretations, settlers' disregard of the Treaty's protection of Maori customary rights to land and property, and explores Maori claims that colonial imperialism and assimilationist policy have resulted in cultural demolition and economic and social deprivation.
