Associate Professor Amanda Nettelbeck and Dr. Robert Foster talk about their book In the name of the law : William Willshire and the policing of the Australian frontier. In 1891 Mounted Constable William Willshire, the Officer in Charge of Native Police, and notorious for the violence of his patrols, was arrested for the murder of two Aboriginal men. With Aboriginal resistance to European incursions upon their land at its height, the case escalated the hardening of racial attitudes and national sentiment. Part murder mystery and part courtroom drama, the story of Constable William Willshire illuminates unfolding issues of race and nationalism in colonial Australia on the eve of Federation. The authors examine the qualities, strengths and weaknesses of this man against the backdrop of the changing times he was living through.en
