Abstract

The late 1980s and early 1990s are culturally and creatively significant as they saw the emergence of a new global form of innovative music known as electronic dance music (EDM). This thesis documents the birth of a local creative industry and argues for the central position of Adelaide, Australia, in the global imaginary and its repositioning within the national imaginary in terms of its contribution to the emergence of EDM. It reveals Adelaide as the first site of techno production in Australia, impacting on international markets, and as an early national innovator of hip-hop production.
