Abstract

This creative investigation examines the role of narcissistic fantasy as a narrative device in contemporary installation and performative video. In this project, I examine how psychological reconstructions of reality (fantasies of love, hate and suicide) might be transformed into installation and performative video works, in order to evaluate the importance of studio-based processes in relation to compulsive psychological mechanisms. This project explores the sublimation of powerful mental processes through art practice, not just as a means of discharge or understanding, but to intensify the studio-based outcomes. The theoretical framework of this research focuses on a psychological examination of the driving forces of fantasy through concepts such as a damaged-self, repression, fantasy and narcissism and is necessarily subjective and self-reflective in nature.
