Abstract
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is an effective approach to assess the prevalence of illicit substances used within a community. Measured drug chemical markers are adjusted using correction factors including flow, population and excretion values to provide daily population-weighted consumption estimates. WBE lends itself to provide consistent, real time and unambiguous data, which are an important basis for the development of informed government and private sector policy and decision-making concerning drug use. The research presented in this Thesis investigated two major uncertainties that have challenged the field of WBE: (1) estimating the actual population for normalising consumption and (2)estimation of cannabis and other cannabinoid use.
