Abstract
The perceived 'gap' between academic research and practice has been of interest to various parties because of the importance of collaboration as a foundation for promoting innovation and competitiveness in manufacturing and services, especially in transitioning industries. The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development reported the level of collaboration between academia and industry in Australia to be among the lowest amongst its members, providing both the opportunity for improvement and the challenge as to how best to reduce the gap and help lift innovation
