Abstract

The automotive sector is in the transition process to future electric vehicles (EV) and the main hurdle for the EVs is achieving sufficient range. Air-conditioning consumes more energy, thus reducing the distance range by nearly 40%. Low emissivity (low-e) windows are a promising way to reduce energy consumption by blocking the heat from the Sun. They consist of a multilayer ultra-thin coating of metallic and dielectric layers. However, low-e windows are not practical in the automotive sector as they block useful mobile signals and need to be placed in double-pane structures due to a lack of environmental stability. This PhD study developed a novel concept of Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS) on low-e coatings to enable mobile signals to pass through supporting interior-to-exterior coverage. Also, it can be applied to lightweight plastic windows (single pane) and offers high durability.
