Abstract

Deploying methods from cultural analysis and organisational studies, this dissertation maps how compassion for animals presents in Western culture and organizations from the 18th century to contemporary times. The dissertation asks two questions: (1) How does compassion for suffering animals present in cultures and organizations; and (2) How can compassion for suffering animals be actualized in businesses and other organizational settings? The analysis, guided by Anat Pick and Simone Weil’s work on the vulnerability of creaturely life, spans four research sites. These sites are political-legal institutions, research-testing facilities, industrial agriculture, and a performing arts organization. Findings indicate compassion for the blatant forms of animal cruelty have become the norm. The chief recommendation from this research is that organizations must develop compassion competencies.
