Abstract
This research program investigated the potential use of an alternative low-intensity exercise mode, blood flow restricted exercise (BFRE) training, for people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This research program was based on the United Kingdom Medical Research Council framework for developing complex novel interventions and included quantitate and qualitative research designs among its four studies. The main findings of this program of research were that BFRE appears to have potential for use in people living with COPD. However, concerns were raised by study participants, including appropriate screening of potential participants, small evidence informing issues related to vascular function and processes for applying the exercise intervention. Compared to other exercise modes, BFRE training is a long way from widespread implementation in people living with COPD.
