Item Metadata only On the application of a Baecklund transformation to linear isotropic elasticity(Oxford University Press (OUP), 1974) Clements, D.; Rogers, C.Baecklund transformations have been employed in gas-dynamics to reduce the hodograph equations to appropriate canonical forms in subsonic, transonic and supersonic flows; thus, for example, the important Kàrmàn-Tsien approximation may be generated as a consequence of a simple Baecklund transformation of the hodograph system. Here, it is shown that Weinstein's correspondence principle in generalized axially symmetric potential theory emerges as a particular member of a class of Baecklund transformations of the Stokes-Beltrami equations. An iterated form of the correspondence principle may be used to obtain solutions to certain boundary-value problems involving axiallysymmetric deformations of an incompressible isotropic linear elastic material. Such solutions assume an added importance in the light of recent work by Selvadurai & Spencer, where the first order theory serves as the basis for solutions in second order incompressible finite elasticity. © 1974 by Academic Press Inc. Linearly, the short-crested wave system we consider occurs when two progressive wavetrains of equal amplitude and frequency are propagating at an angle to each other. Solutions are calculated via a computer-generated perturbation expansion in wave steepness. Harmonic resonance affects the solutions but Padé approximants can be used to estimate wave properties such as maximum wave steepness, frequency, kinetic energy and potential energy. The force exerted by waves being reflected by a seawall is also calculated. Our results for the maximum depth-integrated onshore wave force in the standing wave limit are compared with experiment. The maximum force exerted on a seawail occurs for a steep wave in shallow water incident at an oblique angle. Results are given for this maximum force.Item Metadata only Initial flow of liquid in accelerating tank(American Society of Civil Engineers, 1988) Roberts, A.J.The initial stage of liquid flow generated in a partly filled rectangular tank by suddenly accelerating the tank is investigated. It is found that the liquid, as a whole, is not accelerated at the same rate as the tank (this effect is especially marked for long shallow tanks). Thus, at later times a considerable excess force must be applied to the liquid in order for it to ``catch-up'' on this acceleration. These results are applicable to the behavior of liquid being carried in a road tanker when the tanker brakes or accelerates. It describes the initial stage of the sloshing motion of the liquid which may lead to handling difficulties or structural failure.Item Metadata only Standing waves in deep water: their stability and extreme form(American Institute of Physics, 1992) Mercer, G.N.; Roberts, A.J.Abstract not availableItem Metadata only A characterization of the classical unital(Springer, 1994) Barwick, S.G.We define Buekenhout unitals in derivable translation planes of dimension 2 over their kernel and provide a characterization of these unitals.
