Research in the School of Dentistry has a long and distinguished history at the University of Adelaide. It is home to the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health (ARCPOH) and the Colgate Clinical Dental Research Centre, which is the most advanced dental research centre in the southern hemisphere. The School has a broad scope of dental research, including child and geriatric dental health, dental services research and fluoride studies to name a few.

Item Metadata only Skeletal maturation in Australian Aborigines(Wiley, 1976) Brown, T.; Grave, K.C.Skeletal ages of Aboriginal children living on a Commonwealth Government settlement at Yuendumu, in the Northern Territory, were assessed by rating standardized radiographs of the hand and wrist according to the Greulich-Pyle atlas. On average, skeletal ages lagged behind chronological ages, more so in boys than in girls. The retardation relative to North American standards peaked at a value of 6 to 10 months between ages 7 to 14 years in boys. For most age groups in girls the retardation in skeletal development did not exceed 6 months. Limitations in the use of Greulich-Pyle reference standards to assess skeletal development in children of a different ethnic group are discussed. However, in the absence of standards derived from Aboriginal children, ratings based on the atlas standards provide reliable estimates of skeletal development, particularly if appropriate adjustments are made to the age scale as indicated by the present findings.Item Metadata only Chlorhexidine affects arginine metabolism as well as glycolysis in a strain of Streptococcus sanguis(Wiley, 1987) Rogers, A.H.; Zilm, P.S.; Gully, N.J.; Pfennig, A.L.Abstract The effect of Chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) on the uptake and catabolism of arginine (arg) by Streptococcus sanguis P4A7 was investigated since the ability to use this amino acid may play a role in its existence in dental plaque. Organisms were grown glucose-limited in continuous culture in a chemically-defined medium. Washed cells, resuspended in a salt solution, were exposed to various concentrations of CHX prior to the addition of arg. Uptake of arginine and the appearance of its catabolites were monitored by HPLC analysis of cell suspension filtrates. At pH 7.0 and 5.5, both uptake and breakdown were progressively reduced by 0.06 and 0.12 mM CHX and these effects were even more marked in the presence of 0.24 mM CHX, which also reduced cell viability. The glycolytic rate was also progressively reduced as the level of CHX was raised from 0.06 to 0.24 mM. The arginine deiminase pathway, as well as glycolysis, is thus depressed by sub-inhibitory concentrations of CHX and it is suggested that this could have far-reaching effects on overall plaque metabolism.Item Metadata only Current controversies in late incisor crowding(Academy of Medicine, Singapore, 1995) Sampson, W.Item Metadata only The investigation of various mucilages as the basis for artificial saliva products(Australian Dental Association, 1995) Tan, C. Their many uses are discussed with the philosophy of their use and their disadvantages and contra-indications. With an increase in the number of elderly edentulous patients, there is likely to be a greater demand for denture adhesives. Dentists will need to be more aware of the need to prescribe denture adhesives and manufacturers are encouraged to improve commercially available products.Item Metadata only Commonwealth Dental Health Program Baseline Evaluation Report 1994(Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Dental Statistics and Research Unit, 1995) Allister, J.; Brennan, D.; Carter, K.; Davies, M.; Slade, G.; Spencer, A.; Stewart, J.; Szuster, F.; Thomson, W.Item Metadata only Necrotising ulcerative stomatitis in association with NUP in an HIV positive male(Venereology Publishing Inc., 1995) Coates, Elizabeth Ann; Gorkic, Edward; Rogers, G.; Goss, Alastair Norman; School of DentistryItem Metadata only The Begg bracket(Australian Begg Orthodontic Society, 1995) Dreyer, C.Item Metadata only Banding and initial archwires(Australian Begg Orthodontic Society, 1995) Sampson, W.Item Metadata only A bitemark and a fracture?(International Organisation for Forensic Odonto-Stomatology, 1995) Free, E.
