Item Metadata only Annals of the University of Adelaide / V.A. Edgeloe(Barr Smith Press, 2003) Edgeloe, V. A. (Victor Allen), 1907-2003.Item Metadata only Augustus Short and the founding of the University of Adelaide(Barr Smith Press, 2014) Whiting, M.W.Augustus Short was a pioneer in every sense of the word. A diligent priest, a gifted teacher and a determined advocate of social reform, his appointment as the first Anglican bishop of the tolerant and progressive colony of South Australia was to have a far-reaching impact on the community in his adopted home. Short’s story has been recorded in several biographies, and his legacy looms large in the Anglican Church and in The Collegiate School of St Peter, but his pivotal role in establishing the University of Adelaide has remained largely unexplored. The rediscovery of Short’s vision for a great university — free from any test of religious affiliation, with an internationally-focussed staff, a diverse, enlightened student mix, and open to every capable person, regardless of wealth — is inspiring a new generation of students and teachers. Michael Whiting’s study of Short’s contribution to education in South Australia, and especially the founding of the University of Adelaide, is a story about transformation, possibility and opportunity that still rings true after 140 years.Item Open Access Augustus Short: the early years of a modern educator 1802-1847(University of Adelaide Press, 2018) Whiting, M.This volume (a companion to Augustus Short and the Founding of the University of Adelaide, published in 2014) explores Short’s life before arriving in South Australia — his education at Westminster School and at Christ Church, Oxford. An outstanding scholar, Short was ordained a priest of the Church of England in 1827, and taught at Christ Church before serving eleven years in a rural parish in Northamptonshire. Many of the courageous and innovative ideas Short practised as Bishop of Adelaide had their origins in his education, and were influenced by those he studied with — Bishop Thomas Vowler Short, Bishop Charles Lloyd, Edward Bouverie Pusey and John Henry Newman, among others. Short’s first forty-five years were dominated by Christ Church, and this is equally a story of that enduring community of learning and worship as it shaped Short’s beliefs and choices in life.Item Metadata only Australian plonky / Ian Hickinbotham.(Barr Smith Press, 2007) Hickinbotham, IanAutobiography of the author, graduate of the inaugural Diploma of Oenology course established in 1936 at Roseworthy Agricultural College, and his career as a pioneering oenologist and influential wine-maker.Item Open Access Defining moments(Barr Smith Press University of Adelaide Library, 1999) Keig, Rita; Keig, AlanThe Adelaide University Library decided to mark the milestone of the acquisition of its two millionth book in 1999 with a special celebration to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the establishment of Adelaide University. We asked a number of South Australians to take a few moments to recollect an example of literature, music or learning which signalled a 'defining moment' in their lives and to briefly describe why the work had such an impact on them. We present in this commemorative publication their responses, and have linked them when appropriate to the holdings of our Library. The variety of 'moments' recorded here is, we believe, symbolic of life's rich tapestry as reflected within the two million books, poems, journals, scores, manuscripts, prints, newspapers, tapes and similar publications, which comprise the collections of the University of Adelaide Library.Item Metadata only Essays in advocacy(Barr Smith Press, 2012) Gray, T.; Hinton, M.; Caruso, D.Item Metadata only First among equals : Chief Justices of South Australia since Federation / by John Emerson ; foreword by the Hon. Its publication in 2016 coincides with their 60th, 50th and 25th birthdays respectively. Commemorative activities, including this book, provide a link between our present day and the past, and help to explain the evolution of our institutions. They provide an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of each of our academic institutions, and of the individuals within them. Psychology at Adelaide’s Universities has occupied a distinctive position within the state, and the documentation of its unique history is an important step in its official chronicle.Item Metadata only Joanna and Robert : the Barr Smiths’ life in letters, 1853-1919 / edited by Fayette Gosse.(Barr Smith Press, 1996)Item Open Access The letters of Sarah Elizabeth Jackson (1910-1922)(Barr Smith Press, 2018) Jackson, Sarah Elizabeth; Wall, Barbara‘My sister was a wonderful woman’. So wrote George Canning Jackson on 7 February 1964. His sister, Sarah Elizabeth Jackson (known to friends and family by her second name, Elizabeth), had died of consumption on 14 January 1923, aged thirty-two. Canning Jackson was writing to Dr Helen Mayo, to whom he sent all the letters written by Elizabeth that he had been able to find. These letters were later deposited in the Rare Books and Special Collections section of the Barr Smith Library in the University of Adelaide, and are here presented in this volume with an introduction by Barbara Wall. Elizabeth had a remarkable influence on the young men and women of Adelaide, especially those connected with the University of Adelaide. Her exceptional personality, her extraordinary powers of thinking and communicating, her thoughtfulness, her devotion to the causes of women and children, her passion for redressing wrongs, her wit and delight in nonsense all shine through these letters, and help us to understand the outstanding impact and influence she had on her contemporaries.Item Open Access Mechanisms of vascular disease: A reference book for vascular specialists(Barr Smith Press, 2011) Fitridge, R.; Thompson, M.New updated edition first published with Cambridge University Press. This book records some of the key events that have shaped the School's excellence in teaching and research, whilst also exploring the lives of some of the personalities who have driven change within the School. In addition, the book considers both the future of dental education as well as likely developments in dental research and practice, and the way these two things are linked. The book also contains three chapters in which former students of the Dental School provide personal viewpoints of their education at the Adelaide Dental School. The final appendices contain a potpourri of archival material, including copies of documents and examples of lecture notes and examination papers. As a whole, this book provides both a record of the key achievements that have made the School what it is today and an insight into what the next 100 years may hold for the School.Item Open Access The Building of Economics at Adelaide(Barr Smith Press, 2009) Anderson, K.; O'Neil, B.The Economics discipline at the University of Adelaide has a distinguished 100 year history of which the University and the State of South Australia can be proud. Very few other departments, of any discipline in Australian universities, could claim to have a majority of its lecturer appointments rising to full Professor status over a period as long as 1901 to 1995. Nor would many other university departments be able to say they have had five of their graduates win Rhodes Scholarships in the past 12 years.Item Metadata only The spirit of knowledge: a social history of the University of Adelaide, North Terrace campus(Barr Smith Press, 2011) Linn, R.Established in the 1870s, The University of Adelaide built its first building on North Terrace in the early 1880s. Richly illustrated in full colour, and accompanied by a fully-documented text, this book takes readers on a journey of discovery through the evolution of one of South Australia’s most notable institutions.
