Item Metadata only Employing the interactive oral to mitigate threats to academic integrity from ChatGPT(American Psychological Association (APA), 2023) Newell, S.ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence tool that generates human-like text, making it difficult to detect. Despite its potential as a pedagogical tool, educators must be aware of the risk of academic misconduct when students use ChatGPT to submit third-party material as their own work. To ensure authorship of assignments, ChatGPT is requiring psychology educators to make the learning journey more visible. Interactive oral assessments require students to engage in conversation and demonstrate their knowledge of a topic in real time, making it challenging for students to rely solely on ChatGPT. To maximize the effectiveness of the interactive oral in preserving academic integrity, it is important for psychology educators to carefully design and implement the assessment, establish clear guidelines, and provide training for markers and students. In addition, educators should hold honest discussions about ChatGPT and modeling to promote integrity among students. By implementing interactive oral assessments, educators can balance assessment security and academic integrity while providing students with opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the material.Item Open Access Refugee youth and transition to further education, training, and employment in Australia: Research protocol of a mixed methods study(JMIR Publications, 2019) Ziaian, T.; Miller, E.; De Anstiss, H.; Puvimanasinghe, T.; Dollard, M.; Esterman, A.; Barrie, H.; Stewart-Jones, T.Background: Young people with refugee experiences are widely acknowledged as encountering multiple disadvantages that affect their school completion and retention, university entry, and subsequent employment. This paper discusses the rationale for and protocol of a mixed methods investigation focusing on improving education and employment outcomes among refugee background youth aged 15 to 24 years from three focus regions: the Middle East (Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria), South Asia (Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar/Burma, Pakistan) and Africa (Sudan, South Sudan, Liberia, Ethiopia, Somalia, DR Congo). Objective: The rationale of the project is to identify the facilitators and barriers to successful transition from school to further education and employment; investigate participant awareness of support systems available when faced with education and employment difficulties; redress the disadvantages encountered by refugee background youth; and bridge the gap between research, policy, and practice in relation to social inclusion and participation. Methods: The study involves collecting survey data from 600 youth followed by individual interviews with a subset of 60 youth, their parents/primary caregivers, and their teachers. A cross-sectional survey will assess facilitators and barriers to successful transition from school to further education and employment. Individual interviews will provide context-rich data on key issues relevant to education and employment outcomes. Results: The study began in 2016 and is due for completion by the end of 2019. The quantitative survey has been conducted with 635 participants and was closed in March 2019. The qualitative interview stage is ongoing, and the current total in April 2019 is 93 participants including educators, youth, and family members of the youth. Analysis and presentation of results will be available in 2020. Some preliminary findings will be available during the late half of 2019. Conclusions: This project will contribute new and unique insights to knowledge in relation to key factors influencing education and employment outcomes among refugee youth. This research will enable effective planning for the needs of some of Australia’s most disadvantaged and marginalized young people, leading to a sustainable improvement in the education and employability of young refugees.Item Open Access “I *know* all the things I should be doing …": accounting for mental health and illness in an online mental health discussion forum during the COVID-19 pandemic(BMC, 2023) Horwood, G.; Augoustinos, M.; Due, C.Background: Mental health is highly correlated with a person’s social and economic circumstances, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic made this connection uniquely visible. Yet a discourse of personal responsibility for mental health often dominates in mental health promotion campaigns, media coverage and lay understandings, contributing to the stigmatisation of mental ill-health. Methods: In this study, we analysed how the concept of ‘mental health’ was discursively constructed in an online mental health peer-support forum in Australia during 2020, the period of the first two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. An approach informed by Critical Discursive Psychology was employed to analyse all posts made to a discussion thread entitled “Coping during the coronavirus outbreak” in 2020, a total of 1,687 posts. Results: Two main interpretative repertoires concerning mental health were identified. Under the first repertoire, mental health was understood as resulting largely from the regular performance of a suite of self-care behaviours. Under the second repertoire, mental health was understood as resulting largely from external circumstances outside of the individual’s control. The existence of two different repertoires of mental health created an ideological dilemma which posters negotiated when reporting mental ill-health. A recurring pattern of accounting for mental ill-health was noted in which posters employed a three-part concessive structure to concede Repertoire 1 amid assertions of Repertoire 2; and used disclaimers, justifications, and excuses to avoid negative typification of their identity as ignorant or irresponsible. Conclusions: Mental ill-health was commonly oriented to by forum posters as an accountable or morally untoward state, indicating the societal pervasiveness of a discourse of personal responsibility for mental health. Such discourses are likely to contribute to the stigmatisation of those suffering from mental ill-health. There is a need therefore for future communications about mental health to be framed in a way that increases awareness of social determinants, as well as for policy responses to effect material change to social determinants of mental health.Item Open Access "It's important to manage our stress": Mental health advice in the Australian print news media during the COVID-19 pandemic(Elsevier, 2023) Horwood, G.; Augoustinos, M.; Due, C.The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened existing concerns about mental health and illness in Australia. The news media is an important source of health information, but there has been little research into how advice about mental health is communicated to the public via the news media. In this study, we examined how advice about building and maintaining mental health was discursively constructed in the news media during the COVID-19 pandemic. A discourse analytic approach informed by critical discursive psychology was employed to analyse 436 articles published in daily newspapers in Australia between 1 January and 31 December 2020, which contained references to mental health and the COVID-19 pandemic. Three main interpretative repertoires were identified – negative emotions are a risk to mental health and must be managed; risky emotions should be managed by being controlled (based around a ‘border control’ metaphor); and risky emotions should be managed by being released (based around a ‘pressure cooker’ metaphor). This study demonstrates that, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, advice constructed negative emotions as risky and problematic; and normalized the habitual management of emotions by individuals through strategies of control and release. Potential implications of such discourses for goals of improving population mental health are discussed.Item Metadata only Cognitive load exacerbates rightward biases during computer maze navigation(Elsevier, 2020) Bartlett, M.L.; Scott Gwinn, O.; Thomas, N.A.; Nicholls, M.E.R.Neurologically healthy individuals exhibit subtle attentional asymmetries, such that attention is preferentially directed leftwards for objects in near space and rightwards for objects in far space. These attentional biases also affect navigation and cause people to deviate to the right when passing through an aperture. The current study examined whether the rightward deviations observed in real-world environments translate to simulated environments. As proof of concept and to determine whether rightward biases could be further exacerbated, the degree of cognitive load imposed on participants was manipulated. Experiment 1 asked participants to navigate through the centre of a computer-based doorway. In one block of trials, participants completed the task by itself (baseline condition), while in another block of trials they also completed a simple auditory discrimination task (load condition). While analyses revealed rightward biases for both conditions, the difference between conditions was not significant. Experiment 2 therefore increased the difficulty of the auditory task. Analyses revealed a significant difference between conditions, suggesting that the degree of cognitive load further exacerbates rightward biases, demonstrating that the rightward asymmetries in navigation observed in the real world generalises to a simulated environment and that this phenomenon behaves in a way that is consistent with pseudoneglect.Item Metadata only Cisgenderism and Certitude: Parents of Transgender Children Negotiating Educational Contexts(Duke University Press, 2018) Riggs, D.W.; Bartholomaeus, C.In accounting for their experiences of having a transgender child, cisgender parents often make recourse to a trope of loss to account for their journeys. A focus on loss is also evident in guides for parents and academic writing. In this article, the authors seek to produce an alternative account of loss, one that shifts the focus away from transgender children themselves and onto the broader context in which parents and their transgender children live, with a particular focus on schools. Specifically, the authors consider how cisgenderism produces a loss of certitude for parents, in that parents lose the invisible privileges that accrue to those who occupy an unmarked place within the cisgender norm. To do this, the authors draw on survey data from sixty Australian cisgender parents of transgender children, exploring specifically how they spoke about experiences with schools, both negative and positive.Item Open Access Beyond Feeling Sick: The Visual and Cognitive Aftereffects of Virtual Reality(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2019) Szpak, A.; Michalski, S.C.; Saredakis, D.; Chen, C.S.; Loetscher, T.Despite continued improvements in virtual reality (VR) technologies, many people still experience adverse symptoms from using head-mounted displays (HMDs). Typically, these symptoms are monitored through self-report measures, such as the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ); however, by only using subjective measures many symptoms may be overlooked. In an application-based study, we investigated visual and cognitive aftereffects of using HMDs and their relationship to the reporting of sickness on the SSQ. Visual (accommodation and vergence) and cognitive (reaction time and rapid visual processing) assessments were employed before and after participants engaged in a 30-minute VR table tennis game (VR group, n = 27) or went about their daily activities (control group, n = 28). The data showed changes in accommodation but no concurrent changes in vergence, which likely stems from decoupling accommodation and vergence in VR. Furthermore, larger changes in accommodation were linked to more severe sickness symptoms suggesting that decoupling accommodation and vergence could be more adverse than previously thought. The VR group also had slower decision (cognitive) times, but movement times were unaffected. These findings go beyond the typical self-reporting of sickness in VR studies. Moreover, we demonstrate that even in a high-quality commercial virtual environment, users may experience visual and cognitive aftereffects that may negatively influence their experience with subsequent activities in the real world. Developing an understanding of how VR aftereffects may influence later activities could help to minimise the risk of using HMDs for various applications and may be valuable to obtain a better understanding of user issues and VR safety.Item Open Access The role of psychosocial safety climate on flexible work from home digital job demands and work-life conflict(National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, 2022) Parkin, A.K.; Zadow, A.J.; Potter, R.E.; Afsharian, A.; Dollard, M.F.; Pignata, S.; Bakker, A.B.; Lushington, K.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of employees in flexible work from home has increased markedly along with a reliance on information communication technologies. This study investigated the role of an organisational factor, psychosocial safety climate (PSC; the climate for worker psychological health and safety), as an antecedent of these new kinds of demands (specifically work from home digital job demands) and their effect on work-life conflict. Data were gathered via an online survey of 2,177 employees from 37 Australian universities. Multilevel modelling showed that university level PSC to demands, y=−0.09, SE=0.03, p<0.01, and demands to worklife conflict, y=0.51, SE=0.19, p<0.05, relationships were significant. Supporting the antecedent theory, university level PSC was significantly indirectly related to work-life conflict via demands (LL −0.10 UL −0.01). Against expectations PSC did not moderate the demand to work-life conflict relationship. The results imply that targeting PSC could help prevent work from home digital job demands, and therefore, work-life conflict. Further research is needed on the role of digital job resources as flexible and hybrid work takes hold post COVID.Item Metadata only Use of conversational agents in rehabilitation following brain injury, disease, or stroke: a scoping review protocol(Wolters Kluwer, 2020) Hocking, J.; Oster, C.; Maeder, A.Objective: The objective of the review is to identify peer-reviewed literature reporting the design and use of conversational agents in rehabilitation for adults with brain injury, disease, or stroke. Introduction: Rehabilitation for adults with brain injury, disease, or stroke provides goal-directed care to overcome functional impairments and reduced independence. However, recovery can be impacted due to rehabilitation being time-limited. New therapy approaches supporting rehabilitation and self-management are warranted. Conversational agents provide personal computer-based dialogues that can be designed to meet the specific needs of clients. Interacting with a conversational agent may support rehabilitation for clients with brain injury, disease, or stroke. Inclusion criteria: Studies that report the design or use of conversational agents in rehabilitation for adults aged over 18 years with brain injury, disease, or stroke will be considered for inclusion. Research settings may include hospitals, community settings, and homes. Eligible study types are peer-reviewed research protocols, prototype development papers, and pilot and clinical trials. Methods: Primary sourcing databases (MEDLINE [Ovid], Scopus, ProQuest [all databases], Web of Science) and gray literature sources will be searched with no date limitations. Only studies published in English will be considered due to feasibility limitations. Two independent reviewers will screen the retrieved papers by title and abstract, and the selected papers by full-text review. Any disagreements will be resolved by an objective arbitrator. Data to be extracted and analyzed from included papers will include details of participants, concept, context, and the study design. Results will be presented narratively and in tabular format.Item Open Access A web-based therapeutic program (We Can Do This) for reducing methamphetamine use and increasing help-seeking among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: Protocol for a randomized wait-list control trial(JMIR Publications, 2019) Reilly, R.E.; McKetin, R.; Wand, H.; Butt, J.; Smout, M.; Ezard, N.; Conigrave, K.; Clark, Y.; Quinn, B.; Treloar, C.; Gray, D.; Dunlop, A.; Roe, Y.; Ward, J.Background: Methamphetamine use is of deep concern to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, but access to culturally appropriate treatment resources and services is limited. Web-based programs have potential as flexible and cost-effective additions to the range of treatment options available to Aboriginal people. The We Can Do This online intervention is designed to incorporate evidence-based therapies in a culturally relevant format using narratives from Aboriginal people to contextualize the therapeutic content. Objective: The goal of the research will be to test the effectiveness of the online intervention in a wait-list controlled randomized trial across multiple sites in urban, regional, and remote locations. Methods: Participants will be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 16 years and over who have used methamphetamine at least weekly for the previous 3 months. They will be recruited online and via health services. During the intervention phase, participants will have access to the online intervention for 6 weeks with optional telephone or face-to-face support provided by participating health services. The primary outcome measure will be the number of days the participant used methamphetamine over the past 4 weeks compared to wait-list controls, assessed at baseline, 1, 2, and 3 months. Secondary outcomes will include help-seeking, readiness to change, severity of dependence, and psychological distress. Any important changes to the protocol will be agreed upon by the trial management committee and communicated to all relevant parties, including trial site representatives and the trial registry. Results: Recruitment will commence in July 2019, and results are expected in early 2021. This research is funded by National Health and Medical Research Council project grant #1100696. The primary sponsor for the trial is the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute. A trial management committee with representation from the participating health services, chief investigators, other Aboriginal experts, and consumers will oversee procedures, trial conduct, analysis, and reporting of the results. Conclusions: The trial of this online intervention builds on existing research supporting the effectiveness of Web-based therapies for a range of psychological and other health-related issues including substance use. If successful, the We Can Do this online intervention will increase the range of options available to Aboriginal people seeking to reduce or stop methamphetamine use. It may provide a pathway into treatment for people who may otherwise be disengaged with health services for a range of reasons and will be a culturally appropriate, evidence-based resource for health practitioners to offer their clients. An experimental study of social influence effects(Wiley, 2019) Lee, G.C.; Platow, M.J.; Augoustinos, M.; Van Rooy, D.; Spears, R.; Bar-Tal, D.Background/Objectives: If people who hold anti-fat attitudes believe these attitudes to be true, then anti-prejudice appeals are likely to be unsuccessful, if only because the targets will not see their attitudes as in need of change. The current study examined processes that may lead people to see their anti-fat attitudes as ‘truth’ or as ‘prejudice’. Subjects/Methods: Participants (N = 482) read anti-fat statements and were then presented with an interpretation of these statements as ‘truth’ or ‘prejudice’. The source of this interpretation was either an (i) in-group or out-group member and (ii) expert or non-expert. Participants’ judgements of the statements were expected to vary such that in-group others and experts would exert more influence than would out-group others and non-experts. Results: Participants aligned their own interpretations of an anti-fat statement with those of an expert, but not with those of a non-expert, F(1,466) = 8.97, p < 0.05, ηp 2 = 0.02. The group membership variable had no effect on judgements of ‘truth’ or ‘prejudice’ of the anti-fat statement. Conclusion: The expressions that people believe constitute anti-fat prejudice versus truth about people described as overweight are influenced by exposure to expert opinion (in this case, by medical doctors). Implications for the success of weight-based anti-prejudice appeals and for healthcare provision are discussed.Item Metadata only Psychosocial stress and methamphetamine use: A mixed-methods study of intersectional stigma and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander methamphetamine use(Elsevier BV, 2023) Sivak, L.; Reilly, R.; Lockton, J.; Treloar, C.; Roe, Y.; McKetin, R.; Butt, J.; Ezard, N.; Winkenweder, H.; Ward, J.Background: Regular methamphetamine use can cause a range of physical, psychological and social harms. Stigma is one factor that impacts engagement and successful completion of treatment. In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who regularly use methamphetamine experience multiple stigmas, which further compounds access to treatment and quality of life. This paper explores the cumulative and compounding effects of participating in a stigmatised activity such as illicit drug use in relation to the stigma experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as a population marginalised through colonisation. Methods: Ten sites nationally participated in a cross-sectional survey measuring a range of factors including psychosocial stress in methamphetamine users. The survey sample size was 734, with 59% identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (n = 433). In addition, a total of 147 mainly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who use methamphetamine, community and family members, and service providers took part in a total of 19 focus groups and 7 interviews. Results: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants experienced multiple psychosocial stressors at significantly higher rates than non-Indigenous participants. These stressors include diminished access to health care (33%), experiences of racism (34%), grief and sorrow (39%), worry for family (46%), and child welfare experiences (46%). The qualitative findings highlight the cumulative impact of historical, political and social stressors on an already stigmatised population. Conclusions: The findings of this unique analysis demonstrate the disruptive impact of methamphetamine use on the lives of those who use methamphetamines and their family members. They also illustrate challenges, such as stigma, that may confront those seeking assistance for drug-related issues. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community involvement is necessary to provide support and education for the individual, the family, and the community as a whole. Stigma reduction is therefore a worthy target for intervention.Item Open Access The wellbeing and support experiences of parents and caregivers from South and Southeast Asian refugee backgrounds during the First 2000 Days: A systematic review(Elsevier, 2023) Aiyar, R.; Due, C.; Taylor, A.M.; Sawyer, A.C.P.There is growing scholarly attention concerning the wellbeing experiences of people from refugee and asylumseeking backgrounds, particularly in relation to antenatal and postnatal care in countries of resettlement. However, less is known about early childhood support for refugee and asylum-seeking parents during the First 2000 Days of a child’s life (conception to age five). There is also little understanding of the needs of refugees and asylum-seekers from South and Southeast (S/SE) Asia for whom there may be unique cultural considerations regarding parenting and support. This systematic review therefore aimed to explore the emotional and physical wellbeing and support experiences of refugee and asylum-seeking families (mothers, fathers, and other family members with caregiving roles) from S/SE Asia during the First 2000 Days. This review was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). We identified publications through a systematic search of six databases. Eligible papers were peer-reviewed, primary data studies published in English, conducted in middle- to high-income countries of resettlement, and included data that could be disaggregated for S/SE Asian families. Of 5,770 publications, 13 articles met inclusion criteria. While our review aimed to explore the experiences of various family members, included papers focused primarily on the experiences of refugee women. Our review found that S/SE Asian refugee parents reported various challenges to physical and emotional wellbeing during the First 2000 Days ranging from nutrition and diet concerns to feelings of anxiousness, grief, isolation, and feelings of distress in healthcare settings. Parents also expressed a level of trust and satisfaction with maternity care during resettlement, however, these experiences were challenged by a lack of culturally responsive care. Findings speak to the importance of informal social supports for S/SE Asian refugee parents, and culturally safe, formal supports where parents feel comfortable to voice their concerns.Item Open Access ‘Being in a place where it matters’: GPs who do and do not work in Aboriginal Health Services(CSIRO Publishing, 2024) Prentice, S.; Barrett, A.; Benson, J.; Elliott, T.Background. Few general practitioners (GPs) pursue a career in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. This research examined factors motivating Australian General Practice Training Program (AGPT) graduates to remain in, or leave, Aboriginal Medical Services (AMSs). Methods. AGPT graduates who remained (n = 11) and left (n = 9) AMSs after placements participated in semi-structured interviews across two studies. Thematic analysis informed by grounded theory was employed. Results. Both participant groups highlighted similar motivations for requesting an AMS placement, particularly their interest in Aboriginal health or culture. Participants enjoyed organisational structures and relationships, and faced similar barriers to working in AMSs. Those who left placed greater emphasis on the politics and bureaucracy, and unpredictability, and also faced the barrier of ties to their current practice. Those who remained in Aboriginal health more proactively addressed barriers and had a more external view of barriers. Conclusions. Factors influencing career decisions of GPs in Aboriginal health overlap with those for GPs in rural and other under-served areas. Training providers can better prepare (e.g. more comprehensive orientations) and support registrars during their placements (e.g. greater mentoring). Registrars’ perceptions of, and reactions to, barriers may be pivotal in determining whether they remain in Aboriginal health. This article provides guidance for training providers to better support AMS registrars and encourage more GPs to work in this sector.Item Open Access The effectiveness of trauma-informed youth justice: a discussion and review(Frontiers Media, 2023) Day, A.; Malvaso, C.; Boyd, C.; Hawkins, K.; Pilkington, R.Youth justice services around the world are under increasing pressure to find new and more effective ways of working with young people. One way forward is to implement a more compassionate approach to service delivery that embraces the idea of ‘trauma-informed practice’. And yet, substantial variation has been observed in how a trauma-informed approach has been defined and understood by practitioners, with idiosyncratic implementation evident across different systems and only limited evidence that this results in reductions in subsequent re-offending. In this paper we argue that the success of efforts to work in more trauma-informed ways cannot be judged using recidivism data alone and that there is a need to identify key indicators of the effectiveness of any traumainformed approach. We present the case for implementing trauma-informed youth justice and outline key features of the approach. We then present a logic model that articulates key components and identifies short- and longer-term outcomes that can be measured to assess the overall performance of a service. The article concludes with a discussion of the current evidential status of traumainformed youth justice, identifying areas of current strength and those where further work is needed to develop the evidence base, including the need to demonstrate the hypothesized association between short-term trauma-informed practice outcomes and the longer-term goal of preventing re-offending.Item Metadata only Hemispheric asymmetries in perceived depth revealed through a radial line bisection task(Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2016) Szpak, A.; Thomas, N.A.; Nicholls, M.E.R.Research suggests that the left cerebral hemisphere is predisposed for processing stimuli in 'near' space, whereas the right hemisphere is specialised for processing stimuli in 'far' space. This hypothesis was tested directly by asking 25 undergraduates to carry out a landmark radial line bisection task. To test the effect of hemispheric differences in processing, the lines were placed to the left, right or centre within the transverse plane. Consistent with predictions, lines in all three conditions were bisected distal to the true centre. More importantly, there was an asymmetry whereby the distal bias was stronger for lines presented in the left hemispace compared to the right hemispace. The results demonstrate that the perception of depth is affected by left/right placement along the lateral axis and highlight the cognitive/neural interplay between the radial and lateral axes.Item Metadata only “No man is an island”: Effects of interpersonal proximity on spatial attention(Informa UK Limited, 2016) Szpak, A.; Nicholls, M.E.R.; Thomas, N.A.; Laham, S.M.; Loetscher, T.While it is generally acknowledged that another person's presence can influence how we behave within our environment, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying this influence is limited. Three experiments investigated the effect of social presence on the lateral distribution of spatial attention. Shifts in spatial attention were measured using line bisection, while participants sat in each other's personal space. An attentional withdrawal was observed, whereby attention moved away from the other person when the same task was using turn-taking (Experiment 1) and independent responding (Experiment 2) paradigms. When participant pairs engaged in different tasks (Experiment 3), attentional withdrawal was no longer observed. Our results strongly suggest that the influence of interpersonal proximity on attention merits greater consideration than it has received from researchers investigating social effects on cognition.Item Open Access Rest intervals during virtual reality gaming augments standing postural sway disturbance(MDPI AG, 2021) Clark, R.A.; Szpak, A.; Michalski, S.C.; Loetscher, T.Immersive virtual reality (VR) can cause acute sickness, visual disturbance, and balance impairment. Some manufacturers recommend intermittent breaks to overcome these issues; however, limited evidence examining whether this is beneficial exists. The aim of this study was to examine whether taking breaks during VR gaming reduced its effect on postural sway during standing balance assessments. Twenty-five people participated in this crossover design study, performing 50 min of VR gaming either continuously or with intermittent 10 min exposure/rest intervals. Standing eyes open, two-legged balance assessments were performed immediately pre-, immediately post- and 40 min post-exposure. The primary outcome measure was total path length; secondary measures included independent axis path velocity, amplitude, standard deviation, discrete and continuous wavelet transform-derived variables, and detrended fluctuation analysis. Total path length was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced immediately post-VR gaming exposure in the intermittent rest break group both in comparison to within-condition baseline values and between-condition timepoint results. Conversely, it remained consistent across timepoints in the continuous exposure group. These changes consisted of a more clustered movement speed pattern about a lower central frequency, evidenced by signal frequency content. These findings indicate that caution is required before recommending rest breaks during VR exposure until we know more about how balance and falls risk are affected.Item Open Access Housing in Place: Housing, Neighbourhood and Resettlement for People from Refugee and Asylum Seeker Backgrounds in Australia(Springer, 2023) Ziersch, A.; Due, C.; Walsh, M.Housing is an important part of building a new life for people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. However, relatively little is known about how housing and neighbourhood experiences affect resettlement and integration. This paper explored experiences of housing and neighbourhood for refugees and asylum seekers in South Australia, Australia. A survey was completed by 423 participants, recruited through service providers, community networks and snowball sampling. Data was analysed using frequencies, chi-square analyses and multivariate logistic regression. The study identified aspects of housing and neighbourhood that were important to participants, as well as highlighting key problems. Housing satisfaction and neighbourhood satisfaction were positively associated, but housing satisfaction was lower than neighbourhood satisfaction. Both were significantly associated with overall satisfaction with life in Australia, although only neighbourhood satisfaction remained significant in the final multivariate model (alongside region of origin, visa and financial situation). Overall, the findings suggest that where housing is situated may be more important for resettlement satisfaction and integration than the housing itself.
