Abstract
Client embeddedness theory has relied on the assumption that the relationship between employee and client is the result of a positive, altruistic motivation held by the employee. Developing insights from emotional labour and self-determination theories, we propose that the employee-client relationship at the heart of client embeddedness may be based on less altruistic, less self-generated reasons. We develop an explanation, first, to explain how client embeddedness may be created by a non-altruistic employee motivation, and, second, how an employee’s controlled motivation may evolve to be increasingly autonomous.
