Abstract

Use of steel plates in shear retrofitting of reinforced concrete beams is a familiar practice in many parts of the world. This paper outlines the state of research on the point of shear strengthening of reinforced concrete beams with external steel plating. A database comprised of experimental data was formed by conducting a detailed review of the available literatures. Test data of sixty-eight reinforced concrete beams was accumulated from eight articles related to the topic. Comprehensive analysis of the database exhibits that the external steel plating is effective in increasing the shear strength of the reinforced concrete beams. Different parameters that have influential effect on the ultimate shear capacity of the beams, has also been evaluated from the analysis and the evaluated parameters are- shear span to depth ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, shear reinforcement ratio, concrete strength, depth of plate, thickness of plate and configurations of plates. Two major failure modes i.e. shear and flexure have been observed in the database, while the shear failure is sub-divided into two categories for data distribution on the basis of plate debonding. Detachment of plates has been observed mainly for steel strips, however, using of connectors improves the failure towards classic shear failure. A possible interaction between the steel plates and internal shear reinforcement has been evaluated in terms of stirrup strains and it has been revealed that the incorporation of steel plates limits the strain development in the stirrups.
