Abstract

This paper aims to assess the relevance of achievement-goal theory and path-goal theory to the design of individual performance-management practices. It outlines the historical development of both theories and their relevance to contemporary organizations. It advances the view that the goal-setting process must be carried out correctly in order to facilitate high levels of individual performance in an organization.
