This thesis investigates the role of language barriers to the experience and satisfaction of Chinese tourists to Kangaroo Island. Findings of this study show that language barriers between tourists and host can (1) hinder the facilitation of the experience by service providers, (2) limit the active involvement of tourists in the experience, (3) impact the experience even when the tourist is not actively involved in its creation and, (4) affect overall satisfaction levels. The findings question the meaning of passive participation and the study introduces a new definition which addresses the tourists’ mental and emotional engagement during the experience. The results assist in optimising the interpersonal tourist-host encounter and improve the understanding of tourist experiences in non-English-speaking tourist markets.
