Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are known as main approaches for cancer treatment. However, it has been very well accepted that chemotherapy and irradiation cause damage to the healthy cells/tissues, leading to emerging some undesired outcomes. Of such, the negative effects of chemotherapy and irradiation on bone marrow (BM) micro-vascular (sinusoids) system have been widely reported. One of the widely used chemotherapeutic agents is methotrexate (MTX) which is used for treatment of many malignancies and inflammatory-related diseases (Minaur, Kounali et al. 2002). MTX has been shown to have many adverse effects on several physiological functions including osteogenesis (Xian, Cool et al. 2007). However, despite its wide use, inadequate attention has been drawn to the negative effect(s) of MTX on BM micro-vascular system and their potential treatments. Therefore, this PhD project attempted to address these questions.
