Abstract
This study updated a study by Barkway and Kirby (1983) of the views of Australian personnel managers concerning the services of organisational psychologists. Changes in personnel manager characteristics included increases in the percentages of those with postgraduate qualifications and of those with no formal qualifications. In addition, there was an increase in the percentage of personnel managers who were women. There was little change in the services being provided by organisational psychologists and little change in those considered to be beneficial by personnel managers. Although there was no overall change in the rated value of the contribution of organisational psychologists, personnel managers of companies using their services were more likely to consider it desirable to do so and they also gave higher ratings to their expected impact on productivity and job satisfaction. Since only 26.7% of companies surveyed were using such services, it would appear that, as in the previous study, there is still considerable scope for the more effective marketing of the services of organisational psychologists.
