Abstract

This paper explores the perspectives of fifteen medical journalists and public relations practitionersinterviewed in- depth nationwide on the role of public relations in medical news gathering anddissemination in Australia. This study is the second phase of mixed- methods research on therelationship between medical journalists and public relations practitioners and follows a quantitativeonline survey which examined their perceptions of each other in an Australian context (Furlan, 2009),using concepts of relational symmetry where dialogic encounters of mutual benefit depend on a twowaycommunicative process (Grunig and Hunt, 1984; Grunig, 2001).
